New Years Eve 2011 – NYE Gig Story

2011 New Years Eve

It’s New Year’s Eve, the biggest party night of the year, so I thought I’d share one of my New Year’s Eve gig stories (and a cautionary tale). This particular event took place many years ago and although I’d already built up a fair amount of DJing experience, this was the first time that I’d taken on a New Year’s Eve party. Prior to the gig I’d carefully planned the all-important count down to the New Year. I knew which tracks I was going to play before the big moment and also how I was going to keep the floor afterwards; I’d got chimes and Auld Lang Syne lined up, and – most importantly – I knew exactly what I was going to say on the mic.

The first part of the gig went well. The venue was nicely busy, and I had no trouble in getting the dance-floor going and satisfying the requests from festive punters. As midnight approached I began my carefully planned ten minute build up right on time. The tracks I’d chosen worked perfectly and I was just about to start my countdown to the New Year patter when I realised that the dancers were all beginning to look around towards the bar with confused looks. The next minute a helpful punter filled me in, the TVs in the bar were showing the BBC’s New Year coverage of Big Ben and the fireworks in London and … midnight had already past! I panicked, pressed play on Auld Lang Syne and mumbled ‘Happy New Year’ into the mic. I’d blown it! No chimes, no countdown and no slick patter! I managed to salvage the night, keeping a good crowd on the dance-floor until my 2am finishing time, but my botched bringing in of the New Year really put a dampener on the gig, at least from my perspective.

It turned out that my watch was just that little bit slow. It could have been no more than 30 seconds, but enough to really mess things up at that crucial time. So my advice for anyone who will be hosting a New Year’s Eve party tonight – check that you know EXACTLY what time it is and start that important countdown at precisely 10 seconds to midnight!

Whether you’re working tonight, or enjoying a much-deserved night off with family and friends, let me be the first to wish you a Happy New Year.

Vestax VCI-300 – the sequel

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010
Vestax VCI-300A few weeks back, the question of the briefly seen Vestax VCI-300 MKII's availability came up on the Serato forum. Using my sage knowledge and experience of Vestax's somewhat flexible approach to timescales, I proffered what I thought to be sound advice along the lines of "I wouldn't wait - it's a minor upgrade and won't be out for eons". Oh dear. Looky what just popped into my inbox... Permalink: http://blog.discostudio.co.uk/2010/07/vestax-vci-300-the-sequel/

The strangely familiar Denon DN-HP500

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010
Having spent an an unnatural amount of time with headphones for the huge group test, I'm always oh so pleased to see yet more of the buggers make it to market, because like we don't have enough to choose from right? But I've seen these new Denon DN-HP500s somewhere before…...

REVIEW: Allen & Heath xone:DX

Monday, June 21st, 2010
The digital age has always been about cramming more into less. But there has to be a practical minimum at which DJing becomes impractical. So imagine the task given to the clever people at Allen & Heath - please squish 4 decks into a laptop sized bag. They did a hell of a job with the xone: 3D and 4D, but no - they needed smaller dammit (fist thuds on boardroom table). Oh and one last thing - they want it plug and play as well as MIDI and effects and cue and loops and ridiculous ins and outs and at ridiculous high quality… and for less than the price of a 4D. That's quite some task, but the bitter pill was sweetened with the addition of Serato's ITCH. What came out was the xone:DX and an eye-opening DJ experience for this vinyl veteran.

Thursday, June 17th, 2010
NAMM is here again. No not the Winter one in Anaheim, but the lesser known one Nashville. Skratchworx won't be in attendance, if only because the big DJ guns tend to get wheeled out in January. But as ever, the mighty Numark corporation is there and has some stuff of interest - namely MIXTRACK.

C1 meets MIDI controller in the all new Quickswitch deck controllers.

DJ? Who says so?

Sunday, May 30th, 2010
It had to happen - reading one too many knee jerk "fake DJ" comments on tha internetz made me snap. So I pose this oh so simple question for you to ponder and get hot under the collar about - just what the hell is a "real DJ"?

Vestax’s PDX-3000 – the sequel

Friday, May 28th, 2010
There's no denying that the once mighty turntable is becoming a thing of yester-year. I'm sure many would disagree, but when clubs are actually removing them, and finding one at a trade show or retailer is a rarity, you know that it's not looking good for the venerable wheels of steel. Thus demand has been considerably less, and supply even harder to come by for some models. The Vestax PDX has been notable by its absence in the retail chain, resulting in several emails enquiring about its demise. But now the Vestax PDX-3000 MKII cat is out of the bag. It seems that in these times of dwindling sales, one company is mad enough to at least pump some cash into a tad of R&D to update their range.
