Two Reference Speaker Monitors With Manual Controller Create A Unique Musical Experience

Pioneer S-DJ05 & Pioneer S-DJ08 Active Reference Speakers

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.’s Professional Sound and Visual Division today introduces its first line of active reference monitoring speakers, S-DJ08 and S-DJ05, designed for DJing and music production. The two speaker models feature excellent sound quality, audio parameter control, built-in linear equalization and four switchable inputs, useful for DJs and producers who need to achieve the highest accuracy in musical reproduction. In addition, both speaker models offer users the ability to change settings such as sound characteristics and audio inputs via a unique manual controller.

“Whether it’s producing music at home, DJing or simply auditioning music, consumers will realize the high quality sound they’re hearing out of these new Pioneer DJ speakers. We’ve also added the ability for DJs and producers who have made a career of music performance and enabled them to make quick audio adjustments to volume, power, equalization and channel inputs via a really cool looking manual controller,” said David Arevalo, senior marketing manager, Professional Sound and Visual Division for Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

Audio Quality

The compact speakers achieve a larger than normal listening area due to the use of a curved waveguide enclosure that directs the soft-dome tweeter’s sound in a wider pattern for better imaging and staging. This means more listeners across a larger area of a room can hear the higher frequencies than with traditional designs. Additionally, the Bass Reflex enclosure extends the lower frequency range to provide more mid-bass and bass output. In order to reproduce the highest quality audio possible, the speakers are also equipped with strong 10cm high-force magnets (S-DJ08) for better control of the subwoofers, a low resonance chimney-style heat sink and a bi-amp circuit that drives the tweeter and woofer separately.

Whether the speakers are utilized for DJing or producing music, the built-in linear equalizer provides further fine-tuning of sound for all listeners’ tastes. The linear equalizer allows users to adjust the low and high bands from -6 dB to +6dB helping to enhance the tonal quality of instruments while producing music or recreate the low frequency sound of a club while DJing for a more realistic experience, important for critical listeners.

Control

Unique to Pioneer’s DJ speakers, the included control accessory allows users to simultaneously operate the volume, power and four switchable input channels of both speakers. The dial style control knob also engages the equalizer and muting of both speakers.

Inputs and Extras

Both S-DJ08 and S-DJ05 speakers feature four types of inputs (XLR, TRS and two sets of RCA) that let users connect various devices simultaneously, such as a computer, DJ equipment, portable device, etc. The various inputs eliminate the need to change cable connections so the speakers can be utilized with a broad variety of sources.

The speakers also feature an environmentally-friendly Auto Standby feature that automatically detects input signals and switches the standby mode when input is not detected within 60 minutes. For additional functionality, bottom screw holes were implemented for use with commercially available stands.

According to Pioneer, The Pioneer S-DJ08 and Pioneer S-DJ05 will be available in January 2011 for a suggested retail price of $1,199/pair and $899/pair, respectively.

Technics SL-1200 / Technics SL-1210 Shaped Our World

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Technics SL-1210 PairIt’s quite sad that traditional vinyl turntables are slowly being replaced by new-age cd players and digital dj gear.

It was the vinyl turntable, and more specificly the Technics SL-1200, that is responsible for the DJ equipment industry as we know it.

The image on the right is a picture of the Technics SL1210 MK2 model that are on display as a pair at the London Science Museum.

Please note: You may not copy or use this image without prior permission from their picture library.

At the London Science Museum they currently have this product on display “within the Science Museum’s Making the Modern World Gallery” as exhibit number 10438138 and is labeled as follows:

Technics SL-1200 direct-drive turntables were first released in 1973, and were aimed at professional DJs on the developing club scene. Pairs of these decks, together with a mixer, became the industry standard tool of hip-hop and club DJs throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Model SL-1210 Mk2.

The Technics SL-1200 turtable has been the choice of DJs and turntablists for almost 4 decades. There has been some rumours of the Technics SL-1200 being discontinued, however there does not seem to have been any official statement from Panasonic so far.
