Musikmesse 2010: The Pioneer 350 family – well almost

Thursday, March 25th, 2010
Trade shows are always a calculated risk at times. You have a large audience of actual real people who can touch your latest shiny toys, as well as a global audience of interweb punters gagging for anything to satisfy their gear geek needs. So the temptation is often stronger than maybe it should be for manufacturers to ship the prototypes to the trade shows. What I'm trying to say is that we tried to film a Pioneer CDJ-350 and DJM-350 demo, but failed.

Musikmesse 2010: the fabled black 05

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010
Taking prime corner position on Vestax's far flung stand was the Vestax PMC-05ProIV. "Yeah whatever Giz.. big deal - we've seen that like a bazillion times already" I hear you cry - but this time it's different. The pictures you thought you'd never see are finally here. Behold the monochromatically beautiful black 05. In this case, less is absolutely and most definitely more.

Hercules DJ Console MK4 Released

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Today Hercules have announced the release of their latest DJ Console, Hercules DJ Console Mk4.

From Hercules, “The Hercules DJ Console Mk4 is the most portable and most compact 2-deck DJ controller with built-in audio for PC and Mac®: just 26.5 x 18.7cm in size (10.4″ x 7.3″) and weighing in at a mere 1.15kg (3.3lb), DJ Console Mk4 is the ideal controller for mobile DJs, wherever they are mixing.”

The DJ Console Mk4 has two stereo outputs, one for mixing and the other for previewing tracks. All rca (phono) outputs enable the unit to be easity integgrated into any home or professional DJ environment.

Using DJ Console Mk4 and the included VirtualDJ® software, DJs can manipulate external audio sources just as they would with an analog mixing setup (the cross fader, volume faders and EQ knobs control mixing between the two external decks).

Musikmesse 2010: djay remote

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010
I'm still unsure (yes even now) about the ability of the iPhone to totally replace the DJ experience in your hand. But some apps have crept out that go some way towards at least helping. And this particular app - djay remote - doesn't aim to do the grunt, but does in fact take over the controls of djay on your Mac. And for the record, the promo video above was made by me - it's my first promo shoot and I'm really proud of it.

Musikmesse 2010: Pioneer CDJ-350 and DJM-350

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010
click for high resThe run up to this year's Musikmesse has been quieter than normal, making me think that I'm spending a shedload of cash and walking around aimlessly more then ever. But Pioneer unveiled the delightfully nextlevelness laden DJM-2000 last week. But the grapevine round these parts twitched with rumours of something else - that Pioneer carefully tried to hide the scent of from me with a smokescreen of spurious PR. But I knew… and this morning the truth is unveiled - say hi to the CDJ-350 and DJM-350. Messe just looked a lot more interesting.

Peavey TriFlex® II Officially Launched

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Peavey TriFlex IIThe Peavey TriFlex II system is a complete sound system providing 1,200 watts of power through a three speaker setup – one 15″ Peavey subwoofer plus two satellite speakers with 10” premium woofers and Peavey RX14™ 1.4” titanium compression drivers on patented Peavey Quadratic Throat Waveguide™ horns. The system is engineered for balanced sound and crisp presentation regardless of the application, with clear sound at high output levels and plenty of punchy bass.

The TriFlex II chassis is housed in the subwoofer enclosure and includes all of the system electronics – two-channel preamp, electronic crossover and subsonic filter – as well as the three power amps. For easy transport, the TriFlex subwoofer can be turned onto its built-in 3” casters, with the satellite speakers secured in the sub’s grille cavity. A cover with pockets to store microphones, cables, etc. is also provided.

The Peavey TriFlex II sets up in seconds; once in position, DJs simply have to remove the two satellite speakers and turn the subwoofer onto its rubber feet so the preamp controls, inputs and outputs are conveniently positioned at the top rear of the subwoofer enclosure. The satellite loudspeakers feature pole mounts for placing on speaker stands to disperse the sound to the audience. These speakers also have a 45-degree back angle so they can be used as floor monitors when placed on the appropriate side.

The TriFlex II enclosures are constructed of sturdy 18 mm MDF with internal bracing and coated with a tough black acrylic paint finish, and feature a 16-gauge perforated metal grille for the ultimate in road-worthy durability.

Musikmesse 2010: Allen & Heath Xone:PB

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Click for high resThe digital age has revolutionised DJing and brought with it a wealth of massive benefits than most would never want to be without. But it doesn't make everything better, and one such area that it positively hurts is the DJ changeover. The cable switchover dance of death makes turns a once smooth move of a crossfader into a nightmarish birds nest of RCA patching. There have been products to make this easier (the Magma Switchbox and NI's multicore cables), but Allen & Heath have their own ideas about this - enter the Xone:PB.

UPDATE: New Pioneer CDJ firmware and rekordbox

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Seems to be Pioneer week on skratchworx. Not only do we publish a CDJ-900 review, announce the übercool DJM-2000 and spread the word about the impending freedom bestowed upon rekordbox, it seems that the CDJs and rekordbox get a bug busting and feature adding update too.

UNBOXED: Numark V7

Monday, March 15th, 2010
For those of you who follow me on Twitter (add me for daily waffling and questions of great DJ importance), you'll have seen me actually moan about the ruthless efficiency of Numark for daring to send me a pair of the highly desirable V7s. It's just that I hadn't expected them to wing their way across the Atlantic quite so quickly. But they are indeed here, and as is customary I've unpeeled one from the safety of its cardboard armour and revealed the shiny naughty bits inside.
